The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) demand that all phlebotomists need to be certified. Effective April 9, 2003, all persons performing phlebotomy who are not doctors, nurses or clinical lab scientists, must be certified as a phlebotomist before they can draw blood.

This course was developed for the non-licensed professional who wishes to learn safe and effective methods of venous blood collection. The course covers a review of the basic anatomy & physiology, laboratory terminology, legal complications, safety factors, potential complications and preventive measures, psychological and physical preparation of the subjection, choice of venipuncture sites, types of devices used, types of collection tubes, order of draw, the appropriate technique of performing a venipuncture, universal precautions, and the appropriate handling and care of the collected specimen.
A total of 40 hours didactic, 58 hours practical with 25 skin punctures and 50 successful venipunctures need completion in order to qualify for certification and to take the state board. These make up basic and advanced phlebotomy.

This course is for persons with less than 1040 hours or no on-the-job experience. The student must perform 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on patients of all ages and weight categories. The individual will receive lectures in preparation for the up coming licensing exam given by the State of California.
The 20 hour course is for persons with at least 1040 hours or more of on-the-job experience or volunteer work and have performed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin
punctures on patients of all ages and weight categories over the past 5 years or have been working as a phlebotomist.
This person will receive the title of Phlebotomy Technician I upon successful completion of the course, national exam and applying to the State for certification.

The classroom segment consists of sixty (60) hours of both lectures and practical instruction delivered in a classroom setting. This segment is designed to provide both a theoretical foundation and hands-on training in venipuncture and skin puncture procedures. Lectures include basic anatomy and physiology with emphasis on the circulatory system, introduction to specimen collection, risk factors and complications, quality assurance in specimen collection as well as professional behavior and responsibilities in patient care settings.
Upon successful completion of the classroom segment, and after passing the national certification exam, the student is assigned to a Clinical Externship at a local hospital, laboratory, or clinic. The State of California requires a minimum of forty (40) hours and fifty (50) blood draws during Externship. Bay Area Medical Academy Externships last between two (2) to four (4) weeks.

The school offers two sessions per year and accepts up to 12 students per session with classes starting in March and August. A certificate of completion is awarded when students have successfully completed the training program.
